Mitcham Removals

Questions

Everything we get asked

Mostly by operations managers, office managers and owners who have been handed the move on top of their actual job. If yours is not here, ask it.

Planning a business move

Do we have to close while we move?

Usually not entirely, and the planning is mostly about making sure you do not have to. There is almost always a way to keep one part of the business working while another part moves.

For a warehouse that means shrinking the pick face gradually. For a trade counter it means front of house and back of house moving at different speeds. For an office it means the technology being ready before the furniture arrives.

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Yes, and for commercial work it is normal rather than exceptional. Evenings, weekends and the quiet periods on an estate are when a great deal of this happens.

It is quoted as ordinary working. Charging a premium for the only period in which a business can actually move would be an odd way to do business.

What do you need from us before you can quote?

A look at both units. Specifically: whether each has a dock or a ground-level shutter, whether a vehicle can turn in the yard, who controls access, and what is going above ground level at the far end.

We can give you a rough shape from a conversation, but a commercial quote given without seeing the yard is a guess with a number attached to it.

Racking, plant and IT

Do you dismantle and rebuild racking?

Yes, and we quote it explicitly rather than folding it into the removal. Racking is a structure with a load rating, not furniture — it comes down in sequence, travels flat and goes back up plumb and braced.

What we will not do is take it down and hand it back to you in a heap for somebody else to put up. Badly rebuilt racking is the one thing on a warehouse move that can genuinely hurt somebody.

Can you move machinery?

We move a great deal of it, and we will tell you plainly where the line is. Lifting, transporting and positioning a machine is our work. Decommissioning it — isolating, draining, purging, and where necessary having it signed off — is a trade, and for many machines it needs somebody qualified.

We would much rather tell you that at survey than discover it on the day, so ask early.

What about the servers and the comms cabinet?

We handle them as a separate planned strand with an owner, not as part of the furniture. In practice that usually means coordinating with your own IT provider about when things come down and when they need to be live again.

The measure of an office move is whether people can work at the other end. Furniture that arrives perfectly into a building with no network is a failed move.

What will you not carry?

Fuels, gas bottles, solvents, resins, thinners and other hazardous goods; anything requiring a hazardous waste consignment note; firearms and ammunition; controlled drugs; cash and high-value negotiable items; and living animals.

On an industrial estate the solvents and gas bottles catch people out most often. Tell us early and it is a non-event.

The CR4 estates

Which estates do you work on?

Willow Lane, Bond Road, Streatham Road, Western Road and the Beddington Lane corridor, plus the smaller yards around Mitcham Junction and the Morden Road side.

We also work well beyond CR4 — the delivery end of a Mitcham business move is frequently somewhere else entirely, and that is fine.

Our yard is shared. Is that a problem?

It is a constraint rather than a problem, and most units on these estates share one. What it means is that the standing position gets agreed in advance rather than assumed, because blocking a shared yard does not inconvenience you — it stops your neighbour trading.

Our landlord wants insurance documents.

Standard, and we send them directly. Give us the estate manager or landlord contact when you book and we will get public liability and goods-in-transit certificates over ahead of the day.

Commercial terms

Do you invoice, or do we pay on the day?

We invoice for commercial work. Payment terms are set out in the quote and in our terms, and account arrangements are straightforward to set up.

Can you store things if the new unit is not ready?

Yes, and for commercial moves it is common because fit-outs run on. Goods are sealed, listed and delivered when the building can actually take them.

Do you do domestic moves as well?

This side of the business is set up for commercial relocation and that is what we are good at. If you are moving a household in Mitcham, there are firms locally whose whole operation is built for that, and you will get a better job from one of them.

How much notice do you need?

Less than most people assume for a straightforward office or counter move. More for anything involving racking, plant or a landlord’s permissions, because those depend on other people’s availability rather than ours.

We hold provisional dates at no cost while a lease completes.

Tell us what is moving

Stock, desks, plant or a counter — and where both units are. We will want to see the two yards before we put a number on it, because that is the only way the number means anything.
